Leeds Keep Liverpool at Bay to Secure Hard-Fought Draw at Anfield
Two unbeaten records remained in place at Anfield, but only one team could derive genuine contentment from the result. Leeds United carried out a textbook strategy of stifling and containing the hosts, with the maiden goalless draw of Arne Slot's reign highlighting the persistent limitations behind the current title holders' recent upturn.
Defensive Masterclass Secures Crucial Point
A drab goalless draw, the first in 84 fixtures for Slot's team, was primarily attributable to the immense dominance of the outstanding defensive duo Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk, combined with the home side's failure to unlock a compact visitors' defence. The Merseysiders were limited to speculative half-chances, and a smattering of boos echoed around the famous ground at the full-time signal on a laboured performance.
"If I don't use the entire group and we have a schedule like this, I would never make changes," the manager explained. "With a footballer like Dominic I have to look after him. We all are aware his recent history was difficult. He is in red-hot shape but it's vital I look after him and sometimes the head needs to win over the heart."
Liverpool's Struggle in the Final Third
Liverpool at first displayed more zip and sharpness than in previous outings, with Jeremie Frimpong influential on the flank. However, clear-cut opportunities were few and far between. The home side's best openings in the first period involved forward Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a smart exchange with Curtis Jones, the French international drifted infield and drew a save from goalkeeper Lucas Perri at his front post.
- The Leeds' shot-stopper could not hold the effort, requiring a crucial block from James Justin to stop Florian Wirtz converting the loose ball.
- Ekitiké later sprinted clear onto a ball over the top but was impeded by Jaka Bijol; despite staying on his feet, his shouts for a spot-kick were dismissed.
Spurned Opportunities Are Costly
Ekitiké's evening worsened when he did not manage to find the target with his clearest opening. Meeting a swift Frimpong delivery in the six-yard box, the attacker miscued a glance that hit the goalkeeper while with an open goal.
At the other end, their most notable sight of goal came from an Liverpool goalkeeper error. The Brazilian shot-stopper sent a wayward pass straight to disruptor Ethan Ampadu, whose instant shot back towards goal was gathered by the recovering goalkeeper.
Turgid Final Stages
The contest descended into a bitty encounter, low on incident. The midfielder, back from suspension, tested Perri from distance. The resulting scramble resulted in Ampadu controlling the ball, giving Liverpool a free-kick in a dangerous position, which Wirtz wasted into the wall.
Slot introduced a triple substitution to bring impetus, and moments later Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to nodding his team in ahead from a corner, his header bouncing just past the post.
Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin believed he had extended his goal run for Leeds in the closing stages, but his tap-in was ruled out for a marginal offside call. Ultimately, both sides had to settle for a single of the spoils.
