{‘She lacks no experience’: the American medical field girds for Høeg's tenure at the Food and Drug Administration.
While the United States undertakes unprecedented revisions to its vaccine schedules, an unexpected name appears somewhat surprisingly: Høeg, a Danish American physician and epidemiologist who rose to prominence by casting doubt on coronavirus vaccines in the pandemic and has concentrated on possible deaths following Covid vaccination in her brief time at the FDA.
Proposed Changes to Pediatric Vaccine Program
Public health authorities had intended to unveil major changes to the childhood vaccine schedule in December, synchronizing the US with Denmark’s vaccine program, it is understood – a significant shift that would place the US out of step with many the world with little proof for benefit. The announcement has been pushed back until the coming year.
In place of the top vaccines chief, Dr. Høeg is set to present at the meeting. She was just designated temporary leader of the FDA’s CDER, the fifth appointee to run the center this year.
A New Direction at the Regulatory Body
This interim role may indicate a strengthened alliance between the drug and biologics centers as Høeg and Prasad solidify control at the FDA – and it points to a renewed priority upon reevaluating long-standing vaccines at the FDA.
Høeg has often pushed for halting specific childhood shot schedules in the US to become more like Denmark's approach, a country with universal health coverage and a population approximately the size of the state of Wisconsin.
To date statements, she has continued to focus on vaccination policy – usually the purview of Dr. Prasad, head of the FDA’s CBER – rather than pharmaceutical oversight.
Questions Over Qualifications
The appointee has little discernible experience in pharmaceutical research, approval processes or management, which has been customary for former directors of the CBER. She has been employed at the FDA as a key advisor to the commissioner and CBER since March.
“It seems she lacks to have any of the qualifications” for overseeing the CDER, said a neurologist and psychiatrist. “She has not conducted a randomized controlled trial. She is not versed in managing a sizeable institution. She has no expertise in pharmaceutical oversight.”
Past commissioners of the center would “be deeply familiar with laws and regulations and the science of pharmaceutical innovation”, noted Janet Woodcock. “Frankly, she lacks the kind of background that previous people who headed the center have had.”
CDER has an immense range of responsibilities at the FDA, the former commissioner pointed out.
“Everybody just pays attention on the innovative therapies, but the off-patent medication office authorizes numerous generic medications. There is also a biosimilars program, non-prescription drug unit and so forth, and each of these must be supervised,” Dr. Woodcock said. “The thing you neglect, that is the part that I always told people is going to bite you.”
Additionally, a substantial leadership element to the position, which oversees more than 5,000 employees. “It’s a massive leadership role, if you perform it correctly,” the former official added.
Official Statement and Contentious Policies
When asked about questions about Høeg’s qualifications and whether this assignment indicates more teamwork among FDA leaders on vaccines, a representative said that the “questions rely on inaccurate premises”.
“Her experience aligns with the duties of her job,” the spokesperson said, noting the months Dr. Høeg spent counseling the agency head on “medication safety and regulatory science, including computerized risk analysis and vaccine surveillance”.
As acting director, Høeg takes over the agency head's new priority voucher program, a contentious rapid therapy clearance system that apparently concerned her preceding directors. “By what process are these therapies being selected for this expedited pathway? Who takes the calls?” Dr. Howard questioned. “There is a lot of lack of transparency going on at the FDA right now.”
Overall, he remarked, “the Food and Drug Administration seems to be moving towards laxer oversight of most medications, with the exception of shots.”
Public Past Work on Immunizations
With vaccines, Dr. Høeg has a clearer, if problematic, history, critics observe. She released a research paper using unverified crowd-sourced reports to estimate the incidence of myocarditis following COVID-19 immunization. She consulted for the state of Florida chief medical officer Joseph Ladapo, who allegedly have modified findings to imply COVID-19 vaccines are pose a greater threat than they are.
Part of her “wish list” for the current administration featured altering rules for new vaccines and ending “optional” vaccines, she stated after the election on a online show. At the agency, Dr. Høeg has reportedly proposed barring young men from getting COVID-19 vaccinations.
“She is an complete dogmatist who commences with her preconceived notions and works backwards to fit the science in a very deceptive, fraudulent fashion,” Dr. Howard said.
