The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
