Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How Pluribus Will Conclude... For Now.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the writers are not listening by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
